Rocking the Shades in SoCAL - Six
All the guys pile back in the car and we drive over to this course called San Juaquin Oaks, which I realize is an AGC course (Tilden Park connection there). The driving range has roughly 30 to 40 stalls in a semi-circle design with the traditional turf mats and rubber tees. I briskly walk over to examine some of the stalls and pick out one that has a nice mat for us to hit on, as some of the mats are a little beat down. Felix was hella dope and went in to get us one of those pre-paid range cards that a lot of southern california folks had presented to me before at Tilden but of course they don't work at our driving range. Fortunately we were able to end up snagging 3 stalls all side by side. Shortly after we start messing around on the range, Johnny shows up to join in the foray. It's a fun time had by all, as Johnny hits an infamous comebacker that seems to roll back onto the mat. My first wood shot shanked right off the barrier haha, I hadn't hit a golf ball since November but my iron play was very consistent so I was very satisfied.
Pres, George, Foobs, and Tim had some good swings, as I tried to give Tim and Mac some pointers on form. Fling was just bombing them left and right.. literally hehe. I tried to hit the range picker and came a few yards but no cigar. The scenery of the moment was this chinese girl with her bf that were 4 stalls over. She sported shorts, a little golf shirt, and a cap with the ponytail sticking out. There were various moments of stealth photography as Fling and I worked at getting some angles. Fling was determined to get one of her post-swing where her belly was exposed hahah. From there, we moved onto the putting green, doing it hacker style by collecting a bunch of range balls to use. This had to be the funniest scene because we only had 2 putters for like 6 people, so a couple folks were using irons to putt with and for a moment I was using a 3-wood Tiger-style to mess around with. Mac, Johnny, and Fling seemed to have the best time using the putters to make long putts. Fling made a small vid of Mac doing a 'championship putt' with me providing some narration and to everyone's surprise, Mac draino'd the 12 foot putt. He then proceeded to make a championship speech.
Anna and Panda showed up towards the end when the 8 of us were doing a closest to the hole putting contest, where the loser had to do a dare... various dare suggestions included going up to that asian golfing chick (who was at one of the practice bunkers with her bf) and chatting with her to running around them to touching that number 5 sign. Alas I forget who was the furthest but no one had to embarrass himself. During this time I actually called my parents to tell them I was in Irvine heh.
Next up, the initial idea was to go bowling or the batting cages, so we headed off to Palace Park with Anna joining with the posse. Palace Park seemed to be divided into 3 sections, one was a bowling alley, the other an arcade, and the middle section was a general outdoor area fully loaded with go-carts (adults and juniors), a batting cage with about 10 stalls or so, a small skate park, and a speed climbing wall. While Felix and Anna went to check out the bowling lane situation, the rest of us made our way into the arcade. They came back to announce that the bowling lanes were empty but by now Johnny and someone else had been engaged in a game of table hockey while Mac and I checked out and played this virtual soccer game where you kick a tethered ball in various penalty shot-style angles. Fling and I also engaged in some sort of paddle ball table soccer game. Mac, Fling, Anna, and I played some of that pop-shot basketball and while the other guys played a car racing game, Fling and Anna had a bball duel which ended in Anna beating down on Fling. Anna came over and asked if I had a camera to take a picture of Fling's upcoming penalty dare, and he was directed towards the merry go around where an infamous picture of Mac and Fling was taken. HAHA.
As we were leaving the arcade, Anna and Fling had won a bunch of tickets and I had some too from that pop-shot bball, so Anna and I made our way over to the prize exchange booth. Despite some bartering, the chick behind the counter was unwilling to budge for 20 extra tickets so we could get enough of these little m&m looking figurines for everyone, instead we settled for a handful of super baby bouncy balls, some homo flower stickers, and a little finger ring.
Next up, batting cages. Although this would be an experience many of us would wish didn't happen the way it did, it still was pretty fun. To sum it up, Anna rocked all of us in contact percentage (even tho it was fast pitch softball). Mac i think made more contact left handed that he did right handed. Fling was dope and sponsored us in the batting tokens. I think we own him a lot.. thanks mang!
